Geo-Coat Webinar Delivers Geothermal Coatings Update

TWI recently held a successful webinar as part of the collaborative Geo-Coat project. The webinar, ‘Geo-Coat: Materials Challenges in Geothermal Energy Production' took place on 22 March 2021 and was hosted by TWI’s Collaborative Project Manager – Materials Business Development, Dr Namrata Kale. 330 people registered for the event, with nearly half of this amount attending on the day and providing some interesting and insightful questions for the speakers.

The Geo-Coat project has seen the development of novel corrosion- and erosion- resistant coatings based on selected high entropy alloys (HEAs) and ceramic/metal mixtures (Cermets). These coatings have shown remarkable resistance to threats from geothermal operations and can be applied through standard coating techniques (primarily high velocity oxygen-fuel and laser cladding).

The coatings have been designed to provide the required bond strength, hardness and density for challenging geothermal applications, with the webinar explaining how the material challenges were met, while also offering results from in-situ durability testing in geothermal environments. The webinar also showed a demonstration of flow assurance models, a demonstration of the economic impact of Geo-Coat through levelized cost of energy (LCOE) results, and the benefits of using coatings from lessons learned by end users.
